A Quiet Little Tropical Paradise That's Often Overlooked

If you ask most people how long they stayed in Madiha, they’ll normally say one evening – one evening of beers and music at The Doctors House. Maybe they saw the sunrise at one of the famous after-parties, or maybe they stayed the night in a bed that wasn’t theirs.
Madiha has long been a place where people visit for one night only. We think that’s a shame – the town has so much more to offer from its quiet surf breaks to its hidden little coves, a great restaurant scene, a community vibe that’s hard to find elsewhere, and of course, a lot of great accommodation options.
In Madiha, you’ll find a more laid-back vibe compared to most of the popular travel locations. The town is tucked away in the jungle off of the main road and this means the busy dusty streets are traded for quiet coastal pathways, and the bars lining the beaches are swapped for palm trees and coral shelves – it’s an amazing place to escape the usual chaos and have a chilled holiday.
Being a small town, Madiha avoids the mega hotels and the package deals that plague other parts of the coast. Instead, you’ll find boutique stays, privately run hotels, beachfront villas, the odd hostel, and charming homestays. Prices also tend to be more affordable – so yes, beachfront is possible for under $30 a night if you look hard enough.
But picking accommodation in Madiha is about more than just price—it’s about vibe. The town’s layout offers distinct neighborhoods, each with its own character. Whether you want to be first out on the surf, last in the bar, floating in the ocean, or lounging with a Lion beer in hand, there’s a perfect spot for you.
In this guide, you’ll find everything you need to know—from average prices and the best parts of town to our curated list of favorite places to stay for every budget. Madiha is the kind of place you’ll never want to leave, and we hope this guide helps you make the most of it.
BEST NEIGHBOURHOODS...
Where To Stay IN Madiha
Madiha Beach
The heart of Madiha, full of bars, restaurants, and beach clubs. Known for its swimmable beaches, snorkeling, and lively nightlife, it’s the social hub of the town.
Madiha Surf
A laidback area surrounding the Madiha Left and Right surf breaks. Perfect for surfers and yogis, with small cafés and hidden rocky coves, offering a relaxed and natural vibe.
Polhena
A popular local holiday area offering affordable stays around a famous local beach for swimming, snorkelling, and parties. Known for it’s ‘holiday’ vibes, it’s lively and authentically Sri Lankan.
Our Recommendation

Madiha is a small town, you can walk from one end to the other in 20–30 minutes, and explore fully in less than a day. So, don’t stress too much about choosing the “perfect” area – you’ll love Madiha no matter where you stay.
That said, our favorite spots are near Madiha Beach or by the surf. The full vibe of the town really comes out in these locations – think stunning little beaches, turtles bobbing across the reefs, music drifting from the bars, and one of Sri Lanka’s best surf spots.
Madiha Surf Area
Perfect for surfers or anyone looking for a super relaxed vibe. Life here feels slower, with jungle pathways, chilled brunch spots, and beachfront properties where you can unwind just steps from the break. It’s a fantastic spot to spend 3–5 nights and fully soak in the laid-back atmosphere. You’ll also find yoga studios and some great boutique stays here.
Madiha Beach Area
If you’re into beach bars and lounging, this is the spot. Spend your days sipping beers under a parasol, swimming with turtles in the calmer waters, or timing your visit for a legendary Doctors House party. While many people only stay here for a couple of nights, it’s just as good for a longer, chilled-out holiday, away from the usual tourist trails.
Polhena
Great for budget travelers or those looking for hidden gems. Polhena has some good quality accommodations at lower prices, but it’s also home to one of the best properties in the area – Meraki – which we think might be the standout place to stay in all of Madiha. You will end up walking 15 – 20 minutes most days though to head closer to Madiha.
BEST ACCOMODATION...
18 Best Hotels in Madiha
Spindrift
An upmarket hostel – perfect for solo travelers, couples, and groups looking to meet new people and enjoy a fun, laid-back vibe. We’re long past our hostel days, but Spindrift is an exception. These guys have really set the standard in Sri Lanka, offering an experience that guarantees a great stay.
Spindrift is all about the good vibes. They’ve nailed the balance between chill, social, party, and adventure, consistently attracting a great crowd where making new friends feels easy.
Every week you can expect BBQ nights, pool parties with DJs, morning yoga sessions, groups surfing together, rooftop cocktails, games nights, or movies on their rooftop bar. It’s always great experience thanks to Spindrifts friendly staff and great hosts.
Charlotte and Josh, the owners, have done an amazing job of the property and the aesthetics. Every detail is carefully considered. From the pale pastel tones of the walls to the funky tiles on the floors, the use of carefully placed shadows, crisp parasols, and the comfy black pillows. The design is chic, relaxing, and a step above the typical hostels.
The rooms don’t disappoint either. The dorms are modern, clean, and don’t feel cramped. And there’s a few private rooms for travellers that want the social vibe with a bit more privacy. All with great matresses. For a hostel, it’s surprisingly easy to get a good nights sleep!
If you’re looking for a great social hostel in Madiha then Spindrift should be top of your list. Make sure to book early, they regularly sell out.

Surf Lodge
A laid-back surf house – ideal for couples, families, and surfers looking for a stylish, comfortable, and relaxed stay close to the beach. Some places feel worth every rupee, and Surf Lodge is one of them. These guys do an incredible job, and everyone we meet loves staying here… including us.
The location couldn’t be better. Almost beachfront, the property’s garden leads to the ocean via a cute jungle pathway. The beach is small, with a coral shelf and calm waters which are great for a dip or getting those classic mermaid pool shots. Plus, Madiha’s two best surf breaks are right here, it’s hard to get closer to rolling out of bed and hitting those waves.
Every stay includes an amazing breakfast, and you can order anything from their menu. We think it’s one of the best brunch spots in Madiha – fresh smoothie bowls, thick pancake stacks, creamy Turkish eggs, and bubbling shakshouka. Honestly, you might want to stay longer just to eat your way through the menu.
The rooms are high quality, featuring big double beds, wicker chair seating areas, fresh outdoor showers, and huge windows overlooking the garden. The vibe is very laid-back, with guests chilling in hammocks or hanging out in the social spaces—it’s the perfect place for unwinding while still being social.
Surf Lodge is one of our top recommendations in Madiha. Between the amazing location, stylish rooms, and great atmosphere, it’s hard to beat. Make sure to book early—this place fills up fast!
Savenrose
A good quality local budget hotel – perfect for couples, families, and travelers who want big rooms, friendly staff, and a great oceanfront location. Whenever we visit Madiha and want to save on accommodation, we end up at Savenrose. It’s hard to beat for the price—spacious rooms with AC and ocean-view balconies for under $40. It’s simple and no-frills, with an old-school Sri Lankan vibe, but it’s clean, well-located, and great value.
The location is a highlight. Snorkelers will love spotting turtles just in front of the entrance, and it’s less than a 2-minute walk to Madiha Beach’s clubs and bars. If you’re heading to a party at Doctors House, you won’t find a more convenient spot—it’s right next door. Just be aware that Wednesdays and Saturdays can get loud due to the parties, so if you’re after complete peace, another option might suit you better.
Savenrose offers basic services, including Sri Lankan food, smoothies, Lion beers, and daily room cleaning. While the food is decent, it’s a bit overpriced, but the big garden with parasols makes it easy to enjoy takeaway from the many great restaurants nearby.
If you’re looking for a cheap, clean, oceanfront stay in a great location close to Madiha Beach, Savenrose is a fantastic choice for budget travelers.

Meraki
A standout boutique stay – perfect for couples, families, and yoga enthusiasts seeking luxury standards and quiet vibes. From the moment we walked in, we knew Meraki was something special. The curved stairs sweeping around tall, minimalist walls felt both striking and subtle, almost a bit Icelandic, while the hanging vines reflected beautifully off the pool. The design here is impeccable.
What started as a lunch visit turned into half a day spent chatting with Iona and Kavishka, and her parents. The property is as wonderful as the family running it—and the French toast? Easily the best we’ve had in Madiha.
Meraki is a bit out the main Madiha area and hidden away in backstreets of Polhena, about a 20-minute walk to Madiha Beach. But with a café, pool, rooftop yoga shallet, and a small shop on-site, you won’t feel the need to venture out often. The shallet is a standout, offering an open, uninterrupted space for your morning yoga practice.
The vibe is laid-back and wellness-focused. Meraki doesn’t serve alcohol, and it’s not the place for partygoers heading to The Doctors House on a Saturday night. Instead, it’s perfect for couples, families, and yoga enthusiasts looking for a quiet, quality retreat.
The rooms are some of the best in the area, with huge, comfy mattresses, handmade wicker furniture, giant work tables, cast iron baths, and pool views that invite you in.
If you’re after top-quality accommodation, a relaxed atmosphere, and don’t mind being a little outside the main Madiha area, Meraki is easily one of our top picks.
Beach Inns
A no-frills beachfront hotel – perfect for families, couples, and friends looking for a laid-back stay right on the beach. Beach Inns is all about location. It sits right on the ocean, with direct access to Madiha Beach on the right and a tiny jungle beach on the left. There’s even a small, lesser-known surf break just in front of the property—a great option if you’re looking to escape the crowds at Madiha’s main breaks.
The rooms are clean, simple, and old-school Sri Lankan style. Some come with balconies and lovely sea views, if you can afford it we’d definitely recommend these rooms.
The property is split between a beachfront section and a larger building across the road. If staying beachfront is a priority, make sure to book a sea-view room or you’ll most likely be across the road. There’s also a small pool, so if you’re not in the mood for saltwater, you can cool off and relax on the sun loungers.
The on-site restaurant serves tasty, budget-friendly meals—we recommend the Hyderabadi Curries and Spring Rolls, it’s a pretty good beachfront option without breaking the bank.
The vibe here is laid-back, with friendly staff ready to help organise day trips, safaris, or even a cooking class. They have quite a few large family rooms great for travellers with kids, but if you’re after a quieter, more couple-oriented stay, you might want to consider other options.
It’s not a luxury spot, but if you’re looking for comfort, great value, and a prime beachfront location with a pool, Beach Inns is a solid choice.

Swell Shacks
Swanky beachfront bungalows – ideal for surfers, digital nomads, and couples looking for high-quality, stylish stays by the sea. Swell Shacks has a style that’s unmistakable from the moment you arrive. Curved off-white walls, giant windows reflecting the ocean blues, crisp grass that invites your towel, and colourful flowers swaying in the breeze—it’s as Instagrammable as it gets.
The rooms are just as impressive and might be the best in Madiha. They blend concrete-style artwork with softer touches, like hat-shaped hanging lights. If the beachfront hammocks weren’t so inviting, you’d find it hard to leave their giant king-sized beds.
As of Jan 2025, Swell Shacks offers two properties. One features six beachfront bungalows and a café right in front of Madiha Surf Point. The other is a villa-style property further down the road with a private pool and a few larger family rooms.
The beachfront bungalows are less private but offer direct access to the surf break and café. These are perfect for surfers or travelers who want to stay close to the waves or enjoy a few evening cocktails. Keep in mind, the café is open to the public, so it’s livelier here.
The villas are quieter, better for those seeking privacy and a more relaxed atmosphere. With a private oceanfront pool and no restaurant, it’s the perfect spot to relax with a book. You’ll still enjoy ocean views and be within walking distance of the surf break and town, it’s just a bit quieter.
Swell Shacks is also a standout for digital nomads, offering fast Wi-Fi and private workspaces in every room. If you’re planning a stylish work trip, this should be your top pick.
For an oceanfront stay with great style, comfort, and a relaxed vibe, Swell Shacks is one of the best options in Madiha. Make sure to book early, this property sells out fast.
Villa Océane
A luxurious beachfront escape – perfect for couples or families looking for top-quality service and something a little special. Villa Océane in Madiha feels like stepping into your own private slice of paradise. With direct access to a secluded beach and gorgeous ocean views, it’s hard not to feel completely relaxed here.
The villa has five spacious, beautifully designed rooms with king-sized four-poster beds, air conditioning, and balconies that overlook the sea. The Master Room takes it up a notch with a bathtub and extra lounge space – perfect for a little indulgence. The lush garden and private pool make it easy to switch off, while the attentive staff ensure every detail is taken care of.
The food here is a real highlight. Expect fresh, homemade meals with a mix of Sri Lankan and Western dishes, all served in stunning dining spaces that make every meal feel special. Whether you’re here to surf Madiha’s famous break, explore the nearby towns of Turtle Point and Mirissa, or just relax with a book by the pool, Villa Océane offers a luxurious base to make the most of it all.
La Polena
A local beachfront hotel – perfect for travelers looking for simple, affordable accommodation with unbeatable beach access. La Polena in Madiha keeps it basic, but the location is the star here. The rooms are spacious and clean, with air conditioning – a real plus in Sri Lanka’s heat – and some come with balconies offering fantastic sea views.
The beachfront is as close to private as you’ll find in Madiha, making it a peaceful spot to relax or go snorkeling right from your doorstep – turtles are a regular sight here. The staff are friendly and helpful, adding a warm, local vibe to your stay.
It’s no-frills, so don’t expect luxury, but if you’re after an affordable place where you can wake up to the sound of the waves and enjoy direct access to the ocean, La Polena is hard to beat.

The guesthouse has a lovely, relaxed garden that’s perfect for unwinding. If you’re into wellness, they run daily yoga classes and ice bath sessions. The on-site restaurant is a highlight, serving great breakfasts, lunches, and authentic Italian dishes – the pasta and desserts are seriously good.

Your Questions Answered
Is Madiha worth visiting?
Absolutely! Madiha is one of Sri Lanka’s hidden gems. Known for its laid-back vibe, stunning little beaches, and incredible surf breaks, it’s a great spot for those looking to relax, surf, or snorkel with turtles. Unlike busier towns, Madiha feels more off-the-beaten-path, offering a more authentic experience.
What’s the best time of year to visit Madiha?
That depends on what you’re looking for. The best time for surfing is between November and April, when the winds blow offshore, creating nice, clean waves. For the best weather, January and February are ideal, with the most sunshine and the least chance of rain.
November and April are shoulder months, which can be hit or miss. While conditions aren’t always perfect, you’ll often find cheaper deals during this time.
From May to October, the south coast experiences the monsoon season, making Madiha very quiet. During these months, the weather is wet, and surfing conditions are less reliable. But places like The Doctors House stay open so there is still life.
If you want to feel the full vibe of the Madiha, we suggest coming between November and April, you’ll enjoy it the most.
How many days should I spend in Madiha?
Most people spend 2–5 days here. That gives you enough time to explore the beaches, enjoy the surf, and soak up the town’s vibe. If you’re a surfer, you might want to stay longer to enjoy the breaks, the waves here are some of the best on the South Coast.
Should I book accommodation in Madiha early?
It depends on when you’re planning to visit. During the high season (November to April), it’s best to book at least a few weeks in advance, especially for popular spots like Meraki, Kohomba Villa, Surf Lodge, or Swell Shacks which tend to get booked months in advance.
If you’re visiting during the low season (May to October), you’ll usually find availability even last-minute, but it’s still a good idea to book ahead if you’re eyeing a specific property.
Is Madiha good for families?
Yes, Madiha is a great option for families. The smaller beaches with calmer waters are perfect for kids to swim safely, and there are plenty of chilled spots to relax. Some accommodations, like Meraki, offer family-friendly facilities and larger rooms.
Are there good places to eat in Madiha?
While Madiha has a smaller selection of restaurants compared to bigger towns, the quality here is excellent, and there’s a good mix of local and Western options to choose from. Prices also tend to be a little cheaper than other more popular towns, perfect for trying as many plates as possible!
Some of our favourite places to eat are:
- Khanna: A great Western and Sri Lanka fusion who are known for their KFC burger.
- Komorebi: A great pick for coffee, Italian pasta, and homemade focaccia.
- Ants Chef: A perfect beachfront spot with cheap local rice and curry.
