Where To Stay In Arugam Bay – The Best Hotels, Villas, And Unique Stays

Open-air cabanas on the beach, sweaty tents in Kumana National Park, infinity pools looking over the lagoon, and the classic ocean view balconies on the beach. Arugam Bay has a great selection of hotels, villas, and unique stays for the perfect East Coast getaway. Welcome to our guide on where to stay in Arugam Bay. We hope you find your dream holiday accommodation.

If you’re reading this article, you’ve already made one great choice… you’re considering heading to Arugam Bay!

Every season since the early 2020s, Arugam Bay has become a regular for us, and these days we often make 2 or 3 trips a year. This town is just so magical, we can’t resist the urge to come back for more.

A man walks along Arugam Bay beach with a surfboard at sunrise

It’s the land of peeling right-hand waves, endless 5km golden sand beaches, wild elephants roaming the streets, friendly locals sharing laughs, sunrise yoga sessions, late-night buzzing parties, and a laidback slowness that’s hard to beat.

Along the way, we’ve fallen in love with the great surf, the nature, and the awesome vibes. But we’ve also fallen in love with the uniqueness of the town.

A group of fishermen push a boat into the water in Arugam Bay

You see, Arugam Bay is a little isolated on the East Coast of Sri Lanka, and the area has been protected from some of the overdevelopment often found in the South. You won’t find the typical hustle and bustle, the traffic, or the crazy buses! And you won’t find the mega hotels either.

What you’ll find instead is some amazing little boutique stays, locally run guesthouses, and unique wild accommodation hidden in nature.

Typically, most people like to base themselves in the main town of Arugam Bay, where the surf is a short walk away and there are enough bars and beach clubs to grab a fresh cold lion with every step you take. But the longer we’ve stayed, the further we’ve explored, and you can also find some surprising chic retreats, relaxing open-air cabanas, and everything in between.

A girl walks down a jungle pathway at Surf N Stay, a top boutique hotel

But navigating Arugam Bay’s accommodation can be a bit difficult – there are a number of confusing options, quirky pricing, and a sea of odd reviews.

So in this where to stay in Arugam Bay guide, you’ll find a complete area guide of the hidden towns and places you might have missed, our vetted top picks for the best hotels, villas, guesthouses, and hostels, and a few unique options that might make your trip truly one to remember.

Arugam Bay Area Guide

When people talk about Arugam Bay, it’s usually about the town itself. But the name is often synonymous with this entire East Coast region, and often, many of the area’s hidden gems are overlooked.

Venture just a little north or south, and you’ll discover a string of smaller deserted beaches, sleepy little villages, and unique one-off boutique stays dotted along the coast. Even the town itself has 2 distinct areas to stay.

Where to stay in Arugam Bay area guide map

So if we let you in on a little secret, the magic of Arugam Bay often extends far beyond the main strip. Here are the areas you should consider exploring.

  • Arugam Bay Town: The main hub for surf, restaurants, bars, and social life.
  • Pasarichenai Beach: A quieter beach south of town, offering relaxed stays within walking distance of the action.
  • Pottuvil: A larger local town north of A-Bay, good for experiencing local life and finding some luxury hotels.
  • Whiskey Point: Popular for its intermediate surf break, with beachfront guesthouses, surf camps, and a very remote laidback beach vibe.
  • Komari / Lighthouse: A remote area 45 mins north of A-Bay with quiet surf, boutique stays, and a focus on relaxation.
  • Panama / Okanda / Kumana: The southern villages near Kumana National Park – ideal for very quiet stays, wildlife, and uncrowded surf.

We highly recommend you spend some time in Arugam Bay Town, being within walking distance of the long 5km beach full of chilled bars, surf schools, hipster restaurants, and Sri Lanka’s longest wave – main point, is hard to beat.

The fishing boats lines up in a row in Arugam Bay

It’s best to stay between the middle and the southern ends of Arugam Bay beach to be closer to the action; the northern end of town can often feel like it takes a lifetime to get anywhere. Pasarichenai Beach is also a great option for those wanting a quiet, relaxed holiday and still be close to town.

If you’re staying longer than 4 days, we think it’s great to try one of the other towns and villages in the area. Lighthouse is our particular favourite and great for quiet surf and open-air cabana stays, and the Okana / Kumana area is perfect if you want to get away from everything, and only have wildlife for company.

Arugam Bay Price Guide

Arugam Bay is a seasonal town with travellers peaking between mid-July to mid-September. If you come in these months, expect the place to be buzzing… but also expect the prices to be high.

The shoulder months of May, June, and October can offer better value, and Arugam Bay is very cheap in the off-season. Here’s what to expect:

Stay typePeak (Jul – Sept)Shoulder (Apr, May, Jun, Oct)Off (Nov – Mar)
High-end / Luxury$200 – 500+$120 – 300+$60 – 300+
Mid-range$70 – 150$40 – 120$20 – 50
Budget$20 – 60$10 – 30$5 – 20

The quality in Arugam Bay is lower than most other towns in Sri Lanka for the price you pay, so we think it’s important to book early if you want to secure the best accommodation. Below you’ll find our vetted recommendations for where to stay. If you know your budget, you can skip to the accommodation you’re looking for:

Surf N Sun

I’m not sure what’s cooler. The giant floor-to-ceiling triangular windows looking over the jungle, or the rustic concrete floral tiles hanging above the bathtubs.

Whichever it is, one thing’s for sure – Surf N Sun lays claim to some of the most stylishly chic rooms in all of A-Bay.

Surf N Sun, a top place to stay in Arugam Bay

This whole place just breathes calm and cool. It has a great rustic, almost indian style with flaky hardwood patterned doors, fish tail palms hanging from the restaurant’s beams, painted masks in every corner, and a giant swing from the trees. It’s just cool from the moment you walk in.

The cabanas are placed in a row at the back of the property. Each has plenty of space, and they’re surrounded by trees, shadows, and the odd hammock.

The pictures online don’t really do this place justice. It’s probably the best accommodation in Arugam Bay town and really feels like a chilled jungle escape right in the hustle and bustle.

This place is definitely on the expensive side. But, if you’re looking for the best accommodation in Arugam Bay that offers a genuine slice of style, incredible baths you’ll dream about, and a comfortable, modern retreat from the bustle, it’s our top recommendation. It’s perfect for couples or families wanting to elevate their A-Bay stay.

The location is about as perfect as it gets. Right in the middle of A-bay, you only need to cross the street to get to the beach, and all the bars and restaurants are within walking distance.

The vibe is chilled. It’s a great place to unwind after a surf or cool off in the pool. Around the restaurant and bar, there’s a bit of a social buzz for travellers wanting to meet people, but you get your own privacy too. It’s just easy-going like the whole East Coast.

Stay Golden

Stay Golden is one of our top recommendations if you’re looking for a quiet, chilled-out break on the beach.

A girl sits on the beach beds at Stay Golden, one of the best hotels in Arugam Bay

Located on Pasarichenai Beach, it’s hidden away on a quiet stretch of sand. You’ll hear nothing but the waves and the wind – perfect for soaking in some rays, chilling in the pool, and some early morning yoga.

The property is standalone with direct beach access, making it feel very exclusive.

They have a range of bungalows, two-story chalets, and family rooms to choose from. Don’t expect anything flashy, they’re a bit basic.

But with the hammocks hanging on the balconies, macrami wall hangings, and polished concrete everywhere, they have a nice boho style that matches the chilled out vibes. This is why you stay here after all.

The vibe is extremely laid-back with a bit of hippie/reggae wellness thrown in. Every morning, you’ll find the early risers practicing in the Yoga Shala whilst the surfers stroll off to the main point.

At midday, most people will be cooling off in the pool or swinging in the hammocks. And in the evening, there’s a nice buzz over a few beers. It’s a slow, social vibe that’s hard to leave.

Jetwing Surf

If you love a bit of luxury but want the classic A-bay beach cabana experience, then you have to try Jetwing Surf, it’s a real treat.

Jetwing Surf's infinity pool, a top place to stay in Arugam Bay

We’ve stayed here a few times and we absolutely love it. You just can’t go wrong with cocktails served to the infinity pool as you look out across the indian ocean, and room service breakfast in your own ‘beach shack’ cabana… epic.

The hotel has a collection of 20 standalone eco-cabanas located on a quiet, almost private beach. The rooms are epic, inside there are tall open thatched roofs above big four-poster beds, amazing outdoor showers where the water flows from conch shells, and private terrace areas to relax and do nothing.

Don’t let the “Surf” in the name fool you too much, the vibe is more couples’ and families’ relaxing in the pool or drinking bottles of wine rather than surfers hitting dawn patrol. This hotel is really about coming to unwind and enjoy Jetwings exceptional service.

The location in Pottuvil is perfect for peace, but means a Tuk Tuk ride if you want the A-Bay town buzz. Jetwing Surf is a brilliant choice if you’re after a truly special, high-quality stay in the Arugam Bay area.

The staff are all very friendly and attentive. Always around to assist with a fresh morning coffee, some new pools towels, some fruit for breakfast, or an afternoon drink delivered to the balcony. There’s also an on-site chef who cooks a great fresh menu.

Aprota Villas

Multi-level infinity pools looking over the ocean, giant bathtubs in the rooms, hanging chairs on the balconies, and private dunk pools in the villas. Aprota Villas is a standout luxury hotel in the Arugam Bay area.

A girl stands between the infinity pools at Aprota Villas

Located at the north end of Whiskey Point beach, this award-winning collection of chalets, villas, and bungalows is a great option for couples and families looking for a typical luxury hotel service and fantastic rooms.

The pool is a really standout feature of this hotel. There’s two l-shaped sections that overlap each other, the top one featuring a bar and an infinity end with views over the Indian Ocean. If you stay here, you basically spend all day floating about with the cocktails flowing… can you ask for much better?

Seared beef cutlets, mudcrab negombo curries, and of course, the fanciest rice and curry you’ll find on the East Coast.

Oruwa Boutique Villas

Normally, we try to stay as close to the beach as possible in Arugam Bay… it is hard to beat those sunrise views. But Oruwa Boutique does make us consider something different, because their pool looking over the lagoon is just something else.

The views from the infinity pool at Oruwa Boutique Villas, a top luxury hotel option in Arugam Bay

This place really comes alive a sunset. Whilst every other property is in the shadows, Oruwa comes alive with the sun setting on the left, and the colours bouncing off the mirror-like lake. We love just grabbing a beer, chilling on the edge of the pool, and enjoy the little moments.

Here, you’ll get a great chance to spot some of the East Coast’s amazing wildlife. The lake is full of pelicans, buffalo, tropical birds, and you get front row seats for the elephants. We saw a giant female every day we stayed here. It’s a really different vibe from anywhere else you’ll find in A-bay.

It’s about a 20-30 minute walk into town, which we wouldn’t recommend in the daytime heat or the darkness at night – it is in a very rural location. Oruwa does offer a free daily Tuk Tuk ride into town though, so it’s still easy to explore the A-Bay buzz but stay in a really high quality room that has the chillest vibes.

Paddyway Resort

It took me maybe 6 months to realise why this hotel was called Paddway Resort. I thought at first it might be connected to some Irish theme… maybe a bar. But no, I was mistaken, really it’s because it’s located a little on the edge of town, near the beautiful rice paddies… of course!

A girl stands in front of the property at Paddway Resort, a top place to stay

This place is about as far away from an Irish bar as you can get. Modern clean rooms, one of the largest pools in town, and a location hidden away from the parties and hustle, it’s a real little oasis.

The hotel has some of the best service in town. The rooms are cleaned daily, the pool area is spotless, and the staff are always helpful. Whether you want a surf lesson, a safari, or a massage. They know the best guides and can organise some awesome activities.

The pool is one of the best in the area and perfect for lounging and cooling off in the afternoon heat.

If you’re looking for a nice quiet location but still walking distance to town, great service, a fantastic host, and a taste of rural Sri Lanka, PaddyWay is a place we’d definitely be checking out. It’s just a good, solid hotel that provides and easy comfortable stay.

Surf Gangs

Surf Gangs is probably the best all-around accommodation in Arugam Bay. Great rooms, great pool, great social vibe, central location – yep it’s just great. We spent a solid three weeks here on a previous trip, and honestly, we just kept extending because nowhere else came close.

A girl lies by the pool at Surf Gangs in Arugam Bay

The owner, Tom, is a super down-to-earth guy from New York. He had a vision to create the go-to chill and hangout spot for surfers and digital nomads. We chatted to him about it over many beers (wine for Tom), the first year he opened, and for sure, we think he might have achieved it.

The vibe is what really sets this place apart. Every day there’s people hanging out by the pool, new friends sharing waves, groups drinking in the kitchen, and laughs all around. It’s a great place to meet people with a social vibe for those who still want nice private rooms. Although they do have some good dorms as well.

Villa Del Mar

Newly built for the 2024 season, Villa Del Mar is a great option if you want European quality and comfort.

I think it’s a bit weird pointing out the beds, but for sure these are the best in town – huge, thick, soft mattresses, lots of pillows, and just nice sheets… a rarity in Sri Lanka. With nice, clean, modern furnishings and good AC, this is one of the easiest places to get a good night’s sleep.

The bedrooms at Villa Del Mar, a great hotel in Arugam Bay

Beyond the rooms, Villa Del Mar has a really nice chill-out space with tonnes of sofas and a huge dining table, perfect for those morning coffee chats or late-night takeaways. And outside the big double doors is a shared pool with sun loungers and umbrellas, a great place to spend those lazy afternoons cooling off.

At a glance:

And the host Karim are really friendly, always there to help and making sure the place is unbelievably clean.

The property is located a little in the backstreets at the south end of town, but it’s only a 5-minute walk to the beach and it’s really quiet at night. Perfect for being able to sleep well. If quality and comfort are your top priorities, then we highly suggest booking at Villa Del Mar.

The location and the vibe just make it so easy to love. The property sits on a standalone plot on Pasarichenai Beach, a quiet stretch of sand away from the hustle and bustle. The garden leads all the way to the ocean, it’s such a beautiful setting, nothing beats these views.

It does take 30 minutes to walk into town, so it’s for those looking for a more laidback chilled stay. Every room has a hammock and a few wooden chairs on the private pink-walled porch. It’s such a great place to relax with your partner or friend, read a book, or just enjoy the slow life.

The owners, Julia and Loku are great hosts. They really care about your stay and are so helpful with tips, organising transport, or any activity in the local area. Hilltop Cabanas

Hilltop Cabanas is genuinely one of our favourite places we’ve ever stayed, anywhere in the world, let alone just Arugam Bay. It’s a truly unique, open-to-nature escape with a practically private surf spot and an unbelievably relaxing community vibe.

Where to stay in Arugam Bay - Hilltop Cabanas

Located up the coast at Komari, Hilltop is a collection of stilted, open-air cabanas hidden amongst palm trees and right on the beach facing Lighthouse Surf Spot.

The vibe is what makes Hilltop so incredibly special. It’s got this amazing community feel, almost like a chilled-out hostel but with private bathrooms and a slightly more mature, well-travelled crowd. Evenings are often spent sharing stories around communal dinners, followed by beers under a star-packed sky with zero light pollution.

The next day, everyone wakes up at first light to share some waves, and then everyone just chills until the sun sets again. The days repeat over and over until you have to leave… perfection.

Yes, the cabanas are basic – no AC, you might share your bathroom visit with a frog, and you basically don’t have four walls – but that’s the whole point. It’s about being in nature and switched off from the outside world.

If you’re looking for a relatively cheap, unique stay where you can surf emptyish waves, meet cool people, eat fantastic food, and properly disconnect (internet is patchy, which we loved!), Hilltop Cabanas is an absolute must. Just remember it’s cash only, and book well in advance for peak season – it’s legendary for a reason.

Roccos

If there’s one thing we guarantee when you visit Arugam Bay, it’ll be very, very hot. So if you can, we highly recommend getting somewhere with a pool, or be super close to the ocean. Another alternative though, is to just stay at Roccos, which has both options… perfect for escaping the heat.

The beachfront pool at Roccos, a top place to stay in Arugam Bay

If the distance from door to both the pool and the ocean was the only measure to pick accommodation, this place would win by miles. This collection of 11 free standing double story blocks and 22 rooms all have private balconies overlooking the pool all have ocean views. The rooms are practically built directly on the sand, it’s about a perfect location as you can get.

The pool at Roccos, a top beachfront hotel in Arugam Bay

Roccos gets a lot of stick for cleanliness, quality, and poor service in their reviews. But we think it’s a little more nuanced and actually this place is ok. Being beachfront, the doors and window frames are a bit worse for wear, the rooms collect sand being so close to the beach, and it’s much easier to walk in dirt than other accommodation.

At a glance:

  • Location – Arugam Bay Town – North

But overall, the rooms are a good size, they’re furnished better than most Sri Lankan standards, and the hot water works in the bathrooms. When you combine that with the amazing views and a nice pool, then this property is actually pretty good.

It’s the service often lets this place down. You have to request the rooms to be cleaned, new bed sheets, or towels rather than the staff being proactive. And for sure you should avoid eating in the restaurant – luckily there’s a number of good options around it.

But, if you kind of just view this place as just a room right on the beach, with a nice pool, for a reasonable price for the quality, and you just ignore the service completely, then this is actually quite a good option… just more self serve Airbnb than hotel standards.

The Tree House

Beth always used to say to me, normally after a few beers, that she wanted to own a farmhouse on the beach… but like a witchy kind of farmhouse. Obviously, I would just raise my eyebrows and say “and where would you find that then?”

Well, it seems the closest place to that wish might actually be in Arugam Bay.

The enchanted lounge space at the Tree house Arugam Bay

The Tree House just has such enchanted Shrek vibes wherever you look. Diamond-shaped doorframes leading into the bathroom, leaves hanging from the stray branches still inside the rooms, uneven steps curving to the second-floor bedroom, and crooked banisters on the balcony. This place is just full of charm and has a completely different style that we love.

Despite the quirkiness, The Tree House is a very comfortable stay. The beds are soft, you still have AC, there’s a little kitchen if you need it, and beautiful ocean views. The location is really central to town, so everything’s a short walk away. We really like staying here, it just cool and convienent.

If you’re looking for something with tonnes of character, a touch of magic, and all the essential comforts, The Tree House is a great option.

Bay Vista

Despite Arugam Bay being one of Sri Lanka’s most famous beach towns, a lot of the beachfront accommodation can be a bit… underwhelming. There are a few too many rundown buildings, questionable decor, and bathrooms that have seen better decades. But thankfully, Bay Vista bucks that trend.

A girl sits on the sun loungers on the beachfront outside Bay Vista, a top place to stay in Arugam Bay

The rooms are big, clean, and comfortable. There’s nothing particularly luxurious about them, but the balconies are nice. There is honestly nothing better than waking up in the morning and wave checking from straight from your rooms, yes, it’s possible to see Main Point from your windows.

There are some cheaper road-facing rooms available, but we highly suggest paying for the beachfront rooms or staying elsewhere, this place is all about the views.

Bay Vista is central on the beach. The property is close to a number of great restaurants and beach clubs (you have to try Salty Swamis), and just far enough away from the parties. Perfect for maximum convenience, and good night’s sleep.

The vibe here is pretty much what you’d expect – super chilled, a little surf-centric, and most quiet throughout the day. People tend to keep themselves to themselves here, and that’s just fine by us.

If an unbeatable location, waking up to the sound of the waves, and having a comfy spot right on the beach is your priority, this place is the best in town. It’s a refreshing find on the A-Bay beachfront.

Whiskey Point Resort

Sometimes, we just want to escape the main Arugam Bay buzz, forget everything else, and focus on surfing. If that’s your plan too, then Whisky Point Resort is a great option.

This unique cabana-style accommodation is located directly opposite Whiskey Point, one of the area’s best beginner/intermediate waves, and within walking distance of Pottuvil Point, Arugam Bay’s longest wave.

A row of beachfront cabanas at Whiskey Point Resort, one of the best hotels in Arugam Bay

The vibe is just what you’d expect, quiet, super laid-back, the odd groups of surfers about, and really it’s all about hitting waves, and maybe a casual beer. It’s an easy place to meet people with a good mix of solo travellers, couples, and groups of friends staying, with everyone typically hanging out at the bar in the evening. Although it is always quiet so expect smallish groups.

  • Location – Whiskey Point Beachfront
  • Rooms – Cabanas, double rooms, beachfront, porch or balcony
  • Price – $80 peak, $50 shoulder
  • Amenities – restaurant, bar

The trade-off for being right on the break is that you’re a tuk-tuk ride from the main Arugam Bay town. So, if you need a massive choice of restaurants, shops, or bars every night, keep that in mind. But if your days revolve around surfing Whiskey of Pottuvil Point, eating, sleeping, and repeating, then the location is spot on.

The beachfront sun-beds at Whiskey Point Resort

Whiskey Point has been pretty inconsistent in recent years and Pottuvil Point only starts working towards the end of July, so we suggest only staying here between the middle to the end of the season when there is likely more waves and more guests for a vibe!

Pompon

If you want to keep the costs down, but you don’t want to skip on the quality, then you have to choose Pompon – it’s the best value accommodation in A-Bay.

A girl lies on the bed in Pompon, a top budget hotel in Arugam Bay

Whenever we’re on a long trip to the East Coast, we always end up spending a few weeks here, it’s just great. The rooms are super clean, they have a nice simple boho decor, the AC is perfect, and the garden is the best place to chill in and chat with friends or other travellers.

The location is very central, it’s a short 5-minute walk to Main Point, and there are tonnes of great restaurants just around the corner. There is some noise in the evening, but we always slept well at night. It’s just a great balance of location, convenience, and comfort.

The vibe is pretty laidback. This is more of a chill out spot with the occasional chat with other travellers and a slow pace of life. Perfect to match those easy coast vibes. Although sometimes you’ll see a few people drinking some beers in the garden and you might spot some familiar faces at Mambos late on a Saturday.

A girl walks through the hallway at Pompon in Arugam Bay

The owner, Katlyn, and the host, Mas, are super friendly and helpful. Whether you need transport, surf lessons, restaurant recommendations or to find some hidden gems they know everything and will help you out. Mas even got us out a messy taxi situation once… thank you man!

Around the property you’ll see quite a few cats. Make sure to say Hi for us, they were born when we visited in April 2024… they’re much bigger than the little kittens we had running around our room!

If you’re looking for great rooms, a good chill out garden, a nice relaxing vibes, and a good price, Pompon is our best value pick in town.

Waypoint

Some hostels just know how to do it right, and Wavepoint is definitely one of them. This place just has the vibes down, social but not too party, chilled but people still up for doing stuff, and a great common area with another privacy to hide away when you need it. We think this Wavepoint is great.

A group of travellers have drinks in the social area at Waypoint, a top hostel in Arugam Bay

The centerpiece is their nice outdoor hangout spot with a bar, a nice pillowed chill area, and some cool hippie vibe under the trees – every afternoon people are hanging out and chilling just enjoying themselves.

This place is social with people up for a drink and having fun. But they also do non-party related activities like movie nights and games nights. It’s great for those who want to meet people but not waste the whole next day in bed.

The dorms are always clean and the beds are a good size with dividers to have a bit of privacy. You get a big locker to yourself to keep your valuables safe. It’s a really well run hostel. There’s also a few private room if you want the social buzz and your own space.

The location is perfect, Waypoint is right in the centre of town. Everything is basically a 2-minute walk away. And even better, East Falafel operates the restaurant at the front of the property, which is our favourite place to eat… this is a top perk in Arugam Bay!

If you want a nice chilled social hostel that’s more about meeting great people rather than partying. This is the place for you.

Upali Resort

If your Arugam Bay plan is basically surf Main Point, eat, surf Main Point, sleep, repeat, and be as close to the waves as humanly possible, then Upali Beach is pretty much where your search ends. This place is basically on the reef, and where I take most of my photos from. You can’t get better.

This is proper beach shack living, but in the best possible way. Here you fall asleep to the sound of the waves and wake up with Main Point at your doorstep. Dawn patrol has never been easier.

The cabanas are super basic. You get a mosquito net and that’s about it. But the beds are comfortable, and the sea breeze keeps you cool. You trade a bit of comfort for location.

The vibe is super chilled, friendly, and all about the surf. Everyone hangs around after a morning session at the on-site café grabbing a coffee and chatting about that awesome wave they just hit.

And in the evening, the coffees are swapped for beer for groups head out to Mambos. It’s just an easy, no-fuss setup that’s great for social travellers.

Access to Upali is a bit awkward, the only way to get to the property is via the beach. So it’s not great if you’re travelling with suitcases or you don’t enjoy walking in stretches of darkness at night.

But, if waking up practically on top of Main Point, with a chilled-out, authentic beach vibe is what you’re after, this place is a winner. It’s simple, it’s perfectly located, and it’s all about the waves.

Rupa’s Hotel

If you need a little more comfort than beach shacks but still be as close to Main Point as possible, then Rupa’s Hotel is where you want to be. We’ve stayed here a few times when we just loved rolling out of bed and being straight on the surf. It’s less than a minute away!

A hammock on a balcony at Rupa's, a top budget hotel

The location is right in the center of town and practically on the beach, you only need to cross a little road to be on the sand. Because you’re right in the thick of it, it can get pretty lively at night.

There are parties and music around, sometimes in the hotel as well, although they tend to do a pretty good job of winding things down at night.

Groups of travellers in Rupa's restaurant

The rooms are decent and do the job. They’re clean, the beds are comfy enough, and the AC works. It’s not super fancy, but it’s a solid enough and worth it for the price. Some of the rooms have views of the ocean, it’s worthing taking one if you can, but you need to book early – they often go.

Rupa’s has one of the best restaurants in town with great pizzas, pastas, and cocktails. We absolutely love eating here and a lot of others do too. So expect quite a few people in the common areas at night. The hotel also puts on regular live music or chilled DJ sessions, it’s a great social vibe.

If you’re looking for great cheap rooms in the best location in town, Rupas is probably the best option.

Hangten Surfskate Hostel

If you’re perfect stay sounds like getting away from the crowds, finding your people, hanging out all day learning to surf and skate, and going on adventures, then Hangten Surfskate Hostel is your place.

A group of travellers sit in the bowl at Hangten Surfskate hostel, a top budget hostel in Arugam Bay

There’s a proper community vibe at Hangten with many travellers staying for long periods and new people coming in regularly. It’s a great place for solo travellers and those wanting to meet new people – everyone has a similar mindset, just chilling out and having fun.

The hostel is a little out of town, about a 20-30 minute walk or a quick tuk-tuk ride. The distance is good though, for sure it creates a more chilled atmosphere where the focus is on skating, chilling, and connecting rather than boozing and partying. Although there’s always a few beers clinking in the evenings.

At a glance:

  • Location – Pasarichenai Beach
  • Rooms – Female dorms, mixdorms, AC
  • Price – $18 private, $11 dorm

The on-site skate park is obviously the main draw, and even if you don’t skate, it’s fun to watch. It really does create a unique vibe every night where everyone just hangs around and gets into the flow. Beyond the skating, there are other social events like family dinners and quiz nights throughout the week. It’s a really well run hostel.

The dorms are ok, nothing special –  luckily, they have AC and all the beds have privacy curtains. But they are a little small and the beds/matresses are a bit old. They are passable though and the vibe more than makes up for it.

If you love skating or want to learn, or if you just want a really social, fun, and friendly hostel experience with a bit of a unique twist. Hangten is our top recommendation.

Oasis Bay

Last on the list, and one of our all-time favs, is Oasis Bay. This place is just great. It’s basic, but with big rooms, good beds, large private porches or balconies, and a good chillout restaurant area, it’s a solid choice for those looking for an easy, comfortable, and relatively cheap stay.

The garden at Oasis Bay in Arugam Bay, a top budget hotel to stay

This was the hotel we stayed in the first time we visited Arugam Bay. The vibes are pretty much the same, just a bunch of surfers, couples, and friends casually going about their days without a care in the world. It was a great choice then, and it’s a great choice now.

At a glance:

  • Location – Arugam Bay Town – middle
  • Rooms – Double rooms, twin rooms, triple rooms, AC
  • Price – $50 per night
  • Amenities – restaurant, bar
  • Includes – breakfast, water

Located down one of the side streets close to the town center, Oasis Bay is pretty quiet but easy to get to everything. The restaurant always has chilled vibes with people just chatting and going about their day, and these guys definitely have one of the better free breakfasts in town, you can’t go wrong with smoothie bowls!

Riz, the host, is a standout, always friendly and funny. You can definitely have a good chat and a laugh with him and he’ll gladly help solve any issues you have.

If you’re just looking for a no-fuss vibe, nice budget rooms, and being close to town then Oasis Bay is a great option.

FAQs

Is accommodation in Arugam Bay expensive?

A-Bay is a funny one. A few years ago, it was cheap, a real backpacker haven. But as it’s become more popular without many new options being built, the prices have definitely crept up, especially for anything decent on the beach or with a bit of style.

Compared to the southern surf towns, A-Bay can feel a bit pricier for what you get in terms of quality. But then again, you’re paying for that A-Bay vibe, those legendary right-handers, and the unique East Coast experience. We reckon it’s still good value when you think about it like that – try getting a similar surf-front spot in Costa Rica or Europe for the same cash!

If you don’t want to overspend, you can still find cheaper options that are further away or skimp on some quality. So yeah, there are options, but don’t expect dirt-cheap prices for the prime spots in peak season.

How early should I book?

This really depends on when you’re going and if you’ve got your heart set on a specific place. Arugam Bay gets busy during its main season (April – October), especially in July and August. If you want to stay somewhere specific, we suggest booking early.

What is the best time to stay in Arugam Bay?

Arugam Bay has a totally different season to the South Coast. You want to be heading here during the East Coast’s dry season, which runs between from April to October. This is when the surf is clean, the sun is shining, and the whole place has that awesome, buzzy A-Bay vibe.

July and August are the peak months. The waves are usually at their best and the temperature is baking, but it’s also the busiest and priciest. June and September are nice sweet spots with good conditions and fewer crowds.

From November to March, it’s the East Coast monsoon. Arugam Bay is normally very quiet with many businesses temporarily closed, the surf tends to be messy, and you’ll definitely see some rain. You can still visit, and you’ll find some great deals on accommodation, but it’s a very quiet local only vibe in this period.

What things can you do in Arugam Bay?

Beyond the waves, Arugam Bay us the perfect town to experience the surf culture and explore the magic of the East Coast. Every day you can find something different to do, here’s a little flavour of what you can get up to:

  • Spot Wild Elephants: Yes, wild Elephants roam free here! Rent a scooter and explore the dusty tracks south of A-Bay or west of Pottuvil around sunrise/sunset, seeing these wild is special.
  • Climb Elephant Rock: This is the best sunset view in the area, where you get unbelievable views and good chilled vibes. Read more.
  • Chill on Arugam Bay Beach: It’s the heart of the town. Watch the fishermen, swim in the ocean, grab a coconut from a beach bar, and drink beers at sunset. Perfect.
  • Safari at Kumana National Park: Spot elephants, crocodiles, buffalo, birds, and leopards in Yala East, otherwise known as Kumana, one of the quieter safaris in Sri Lanka.
  • Explore the area on a Moped: The roads around A-Bay are quiet. Head south to find hidden beaches, cruise through farmlands, find wildlife. Head north for cute little local villages. It’s such a nice area to explore.
  • Eat at the Hipster Cafes: A-Bay has gone pretty trendy spots to chill-out eat and drink too many iced coffees.
  • Watch the pros surf Main Point: Grab a spot on the sandhill by Main Point, especially in the evening, and watch the local shredders. Great vibe.
  • Party on the Beach: Mambo’s on a Saturday is the big one, but other spots have themed nights and DJs, if you enjoy light night music there’s plenty to find.

What food options are available in Arugam Bay?

Think vibrant, tasty, and with a definite surfer-friendly vibe. A-Bay isn’t really about fancy fine dining (you’ll need a bigger city for that!), but it absolutely nails:

  • Hipster Surf Cafes: These are everywhere and they’re generally great. We’re talking epic smoothie bowls (Squeeze Me does amazing ones in carved-out pineapples!), killer avo toast (Shady Lane is a top shout), brilliant burgers and tacos (Emily’s, especially their Sunday tacos, are a must), and proper good coffee (Salty Swamis bakes its own amazing bread too – their French toast is next level!).
  • Local Sri Lankan Curries: You have to dive into these. Places like Mama’s do incredible all-you-can-eat rice and curry buffets for just a couple of dollars. Expect a daily changing spread of deliciousness – dahl, jackfruit, pumpkin, the works!
  • Fresh Fish & Beach BBQs: Being a fishing town, the seafood is super fresh. Lots of spots will grill up the catch of the day right on the beach.
  • A Bit of International Flavour: You’ll find some cool spots doing things a bit differently. East Falafel (our fave from Ahangama is here too!) does amazing Israeli street food. Little Bang Kitchen offers a Japanese/Asian fusion if you fancy ramen or dumplings. Tandoori Hut does a great Indian curry if you want a change from the local style.
